About the Founder, William (Bill) Graves
Bill completed bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Iowa State University and a doctorate at Purdue University before joining the faculty of the University of Maryland. Bill returned to Iowa State University, where he has conducted research, mentored graduate students, and taught undergraduate and graduate classes for over 20 years. Much of Bill’s research involves the ecology, physiology, propagation, and genetics of trees and shrubs. Additionally, Bill has studied biological nitrogen fixation of woody plants, and worked with a team of researchers to develop bioplastic containers and biobased fertilizers for use during the production of horticultural crops. Bill was appointed associate dean of the university’s Graduate College in 2010 and was appointed as dean in 2017. He is author or co-author of more than 100 papers in refereed journals, co-author of Getting Published in the Life Sciences [John Wiley and Sons, 2011], and held sabbatical research appointments at the University of Delaware and Stanford University.
